Bush Shack Brewery

Kyle’s Favourite: Strawberry Blonde
Liz’s Favourite: Chocolate Beer

The Bush Shack Brewery is a great change from the majority of breweries we have visited. It does not comply with the most of the breweries in the area and the family run brewery does what they do and does it well, really well in fact. The place has a feel of an outback pub and for that we love it. Caps lined up on the ceiling, the bar top worn in, the service was friendly and knowledgeable- this is a place that we would definitely come back to.

The beers are quirky which fits in well, a place in Margaret River that finally has some character! Just to be original we tried a 6 beer tasting platter and we were definitely in for a treat.

Strawberry Blonde, Spelt Beer, Dark Roast Wheat Beer, Yallingup Old, Chocolate Beer, Old St Nick (in order)

First the Strawberry Blonde. This beer is a pale ale brewed with 30kg’s of strawberries and honey. You could think that it would be too much but you would be wrong! It is perfectly balanced with almost subtle tea-style infusion rather than being full and thick like a Belgian fruit beer. It was sheer brilliance!

The Spelt Beer was almost medicinal in flavour but it tasted nice. We could not put a finger on what it tasted like but it was well worth the try.  Ancient brews for the win!

For us the Dark Roast Wheat Beer and Yallingup Old were middle of the road. They were nice but had none of the ‘wow that tastes amazing’ that the previous two beers had.

If you think of a creamy delicious mild chocolate milkshake and combine it with a stout then you have the Chocolate Beer. It is the first time that we have tried a stout and had a lighter chocolate flavour going on and for that it was awesome. Do not be turned away if you are not a fan of stouts as it was so good.

Old St. Nick was a double Scottish ale. The tasting notes were described as Christmas cake flavours and aromas. It smelt like Christmas with the warm fruitiness of raisins and sultanas mixed in with the batter. To be honest we both wanted to love this beer but it was just too much. Old St. Nick almost had the whiskey burn at the end of it and wasn’t for us.
