As fickle as this may sound, we were drawn to this place by the name. Looking at their selection it has a relatively wide range of beers to fit in with all tastes. It’s in a lovely setting (tacked onto a vineyard) and the place was heaving when we went there on a Sunday afternoon. It is one of those places that has a bit of a buzz about it.
The beers, although we only tried 3, the “Old Reliable” Pale Ale, “Hagenbeck” IPA and “Southern Wailer” special brew which was pretty much a mild IPA. They were all were very palatable.
Liz was warned that the Pale Ale had a mild hoppiness in comparison to Australian and American Pale Ales, however, we both found that it had more flavour than a lot of the Pale Ales we have tried recently.
The Hagenbeck IPA on the other hand was either like it or hate it. Kyle liked the IPA style mixed in with the frothiness of a Belgian dubbel and banana-ry flavour, whereas Liz was not so much of a fan. It was an unexpected first sip with a thick creamy head, not something you would normally get with an IPA. Confused mouth syndrome was a pleasant side effect of the beer.
The Southern Wailer was a nice beer, less bitter than your normal IPA but very drinkable. All in all the beers, although we only tried a few of the selection, were pretty good and its a place that we would go back to again.
