Fowlers Bay/ Nundroo

Good stuff: It’s free
Not so good stuff: Right by the main road from Ceduna to Western Australia!
Price: Free

Now that we had finished driving around the Gawler Ranges, we were a bit lost with what to do. Our original idea was to head to Streaky Bay and stay there for a few days. The only issue was that the weather had taken a turn for the worse. Overcast and showers, it wasn’t really beach weather. I mean don’t get me wrong, in the UK this would probably be a glorious day by the seaside but we are Queenslanders now: blue skies, golden sandy beaches and plus 30 degrees temperatures so the current low twenties and gusty winds wasn’t really so appealing.

The majority of the areas from around here are coastal locations and the forecast looked much the same for the next few days. We decided to move on and cover the kilometres instead. We stopped by Poochera on our way back from the Gawler Ranges, mainly for a toilet break. This place is worth a mention because it makes something out of what might seem small to some people. They have Dinosaur Ants!!! Or at least that is what they call them. A living fossil was found in the town of Poochera (after it was though to have been extinct) and now they have adopted the ant as their town mascot. Whether they are proud or being comical about the whole thing, they have devoted an entire town board to information about the ant species found in the area with poem included!

Drive heading towards Fowler's Bay... Great Weather. Action shot hence grainy photo.

From Poochera we headed on towards Fowlers Bay; mainly because it was named Fowlers Bay…  Soft sandy roads met us and we weren’t sure how far away the campground was. A little fed up and wary of the fuel consumption pre Nullarbor, we just decided to turn around (at least we didn’t have to get the compressor out!).  It was impressive scenery in Fowlers Bay with dunes cascading on the left and agricultural land (albeit salty marsh land) on the right, as well as a hot spot for fishing from the town jetty.

It was starting to get late in the day and the purse strings are closed at the moment for paid camping until we get to WA. This meant we ended up by having another first of the trip: the Rest Area Camp. We were setting up our tent right by the main road from SA to WA. Not necessarily the best place to camp but it saves money at the end of the day! But man are those big doubles and road trains loud, especially when they set their air horns off. Presumably they just want to let us know their there, how thoughtful of them, maybe their lonely.

Action shot of Fowlers Bay Vegetation... Damn those corrugations...
