Coffin Bay

Campground: Coffin Bay Caravan Park
Facilities: Toilets, Showers, Powered Sites, Cabins, Laundry, Picnic Areas, Camp Kitchen, Potable Water, Rubbish Bins, Playground.
Good stuff: There are showers…
Not so good stuff: Packed the entire time feeling a little like a bed of mussels, poor camp kitchen layout, ridiculous camp kitchen opening times.
Price: $12 per night per adult.

Now it was time to try OYSTERS! As a treat we went out for a meal at 1802 Bar and Bistro, an early birthday treat for Kyle. The food was incredibly good for the price. The Rockefeller oysters are our must have out of the oyster selection we tried (spinach, watercress and hot pepper sauce topped with parmesan cheese- Yummy!). Oysters are not something we would normally go for but these were pretty good! If you intend on going here, the 1802 pizza is also a must have. Topped with local seafood, they have the perfect balance of juicy local prawns, calamari, delicious mussels and smoked oysters. The base is crispy with exactly the right amount of topping! Due to our fishing failure, we also tried the King George Whiting fish and chips. Again it was a pleasant meal with crispy batter and tasty side salad but the pizza stole the show.

The only photo we have of consumables...

Getting some awesome sunglass tan lines on the go

This is when the experience went a little downhill. The rain decided to fall and gust of wind meant that everything had a sandy crunch to it… You can’t have too much going right at one time! Also, the majority of people moved inside which meant that the outside service fell apart a tad. We were going the full hog and were waiting for the waitress to pick up the plates before ordering dessert for nearly half an hour until we headed in to order the desserts and coffee ourselves.

A little bit of rain didn't hurt anyone

The choices were a little limited of apple crumble, a salted caramel praline tart and a cheese platter, which is probably due to the time of year. Kyle had the cheese platter (yes and nearly all of it that probably would have served 3 people…) and Liz had the tart. This is when the service was a little bizarre. Our coffees came out before we had our desserts, a little unconventional but then you don’t really come to this place for the dessert. All in all it was a lovely meal and the staff were friendly. The slow service was probably a one off due to the previous crazy gustiness where outside bar umbrellas were falling all over the place.  We unfortunately didn’t get any pictures of the food as we were hungry bunnies and scoffed the lot. Oppsy.

As for the caravan park it is well priced and has everything you need. There is even the radio playing in the amenities block. The camp kitchen is poorly laid out and at breakfast time hoards of people are crowded around the fridge that is right next to the four tiny hobs. For powered sites there had been a few complaints about the poor lay out, with power and water points being far from their site. All in all it is just your typical caravan park - maybe we had been lucky to find the little gem in Auburn.

  1. Meal sounds delicious, eating sand was clearly a reminder of childhood picnics at the seaside- can't beat a crunchy sandwich or Cornish pasty;-) Xx
