Kyle’s Favourite: Mango Beer
Liz’s Favourite: Smokey Bishop
Matso’s was the place where we
toasted our 100th beer, which turned out to be the first beer we
tried. Beer 100 was Matso’s Chango beer! Confused? Well it was a mix of their
chilli and mango beer... Not what we were expecting! Matso’s Brewery is known
for their flavoured light beers, not like your heavy Belgian flavoured equivalents
and they do it rather well.
This was our last brewery for a while so we did another tasting platter just to be different… We tried:
Chango- think spicy mango chutney that you couldn’t have too much of.
Chilli Beer- like a medium
curry, it was a builder and quite dry tasting.
Ginger Beer- smelt gingery but
didn’t have much of a gingery taste.
Lychee Beer- very syrupy with
an overpowering lychee-ness.
Mango Beer- sweet and mango-y
with a beer aftertaste. Good but again moderation!
Session Ale- very weak on the
flavour front almost like beer water.
Pindan Pale Ale- mild pale ale
with a slight hoppiness.
Pearler’s Pale Ale- hoppy with
a bit of wheatiness, cloudy appearance.
Smokey Bishop- by far the most
flavourful, a slightly smokey dark larger.
| From the top centre: Chango, Chilli, Ginger, Lychee, Mango, Pindan, Pearler's, Session and finally Smokey Bishop. They could have ordered it better flavour-wise... |
Apart from the Smokey Bishop,
the normal brews were average to below average. The Session ale was probably
the worst beer we have tried on this trip, as it just didn’t taste of anything!
However Matso’s is more about the flavoured beer and that is what they do well.
The Mango beer would be our pick of the bunch. A few sat outside in the sun
would be wonderful, but too many could get sickly.
